Now more than ever, British Columbians are taking control of their health by talking to their community pharmacist. Your Pharmasave pharmacist is a medication expert that can help you better understand your medications. Accessible and convenient, your pharmacist is available to help you with a variety of clinical pharmacy services.
Services Offered by Your Pharmasave Pharmacist
Have you ever wondered what your pharmacist is doing behind the counter while you wait for your prescription to be filled? For each prescription, your pharmacist performs a number of activities to ensure that the medication you have been prescribed is actually appropriate for you.
Once your prescription is received, the pharmacist carefully performs the following checks:
- drug, dosage, quantity, and directions for use are all correct
- prescription doesn’t duplicate any of your current therapy
- serious drug interactions won’t occur between your new prescription and existing medications or medical conditions
- medication is one that you won’t be allergic to
If information is missing from your prescription, or there are any other issues with it, your pharmacist may discuss these with you, or choose to contact your physician, or both. Once your medication is packaged and almost ready to go, your pharmacist performs one final check.
By comparing your prescription label with your doctor’s original prescription and by checking the contents of the prescription vial or container, your pharmacist will ensure that you receive the right medication.
When you pick up your prescription, in order to help you get the most from your medication, your Pharmasave pharmacist will provide counselling on the following:
- what your medication has been prescribed for
- how and when you should take it
- how long you should take it for
- how you will know if your medication is working and what to do if your medication is not working
- possible side effects and what you should do if you experience any
- how you should store your medication
- additional information about your medical condition
In addition to assessing, preparing, and counselling on your prescription medications, your Pharmasave pharmacist can also:
- arrange follow up sessions with you to ensure that your medications are working
- train you on how to use medical devices such as glucose meters
- help you choose appropriate over-the-counter (OTC) medications and products including vitamins and herbs
- provide you with advice and information on common ailments and various health topics
If you have any questions regarding your health, your pharmacist is often the first, and most accessible, health care professional you can visit in your community. Not only are pharmacists medication experts, but they are also knowledgeable in the areas of disease prevention, nutrition, fitness, and general health and wellness. They can work with you to help you achieve your unique longterm health and lifestyle goals.

How does a Medication Optimization Review work?
Medication Optimization Review Services aim to increase communication between patients and pharmacists to promote safe and effective medication use and improve health outcomes.
If you are taking more than five medications – including over the counter medications – within the past six months and would like to better understand what they’re all about, talk to our pharmacists about Medication Optimization Review Services. Although these services are not a new scope of practice for community pharmacists, a new initiative standardizes how they are delivered across B.C. This will ultimately mean higher quality and level of service for you, the patient.
Patients who better understand their medications feel more confident and make better decisions about their health. A Medication Optimization Review allows you to schedule a one-on-one appointment with your pharmacist in a private area of the pharmacy. When you come to the review, you bring with you all of your medications, including prescriptions, over the counter medications, vitamins, supplements and more.
You and your pharmacist will carefully go over each and every one of your medications. Your pharmacist will then provide you with tips and easy to understand advice on how to best take your medication and get the most out of them without, unknowingly, compromising your health. Your pharmacist will also provide you with a list of your current medications to keep as a reminder or to share with other health care professionals. Did you know that you can now get a wide variety of publicly funded vaccines from your local pharmacist? It’s convenient and it’s easy!
Since 2009, pharmacists have played a key role in providing immunizations to protect British Columbians against diseases such as influenza (flu) and pneumococcal disease. Pharmacists are now able to provide even more publicly funded vaccines to BC residents 5 years of age and older, including:
• Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine
• Hepatitis A and B vaccines
• Tetanus/Diphtheria vaccine
• Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine
• HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine
• Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine
• Meningococcal C Conjugate vaccine
• Pertussis vaccine
We all know how difficult it can be to get to the doctor or clinic during work or school hours. Unlike a lot of clinics and doctor’s offices, pharmacies are open later into the evenings and often all weekend. This makes getting vaccinated more convenient than ever before. Pharmacists are also a great source for information about vaccines.
You can also purchase non-publicly funded vaccines from your pharmacist, including vaccines you may need for travel to certain countries, or other vaccines recommended for adults that are not publicly funded.
Our pharmacists are now authorized to give vaccines. Next time you need to get vaccinated, consider dropping into one of our pharmacies. Call us now to book your appointment…
